Nottingham Games 2010 invite

Hi,

In three weeks time, Malaysian Society University of Nottingham will organize Nottingham Malaysian Games, known to many as Notts Games.
The event which is held in conjunction with Malaysian Food Festival will take place at different venues in University of Nottingham, on 6th November 2010.

Nottingham Malaysian Games is the largest sporting event of its kind, attracting members of Malaysian-related university societies from the length and breath of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

It's a good chance for you to get to know other Malaysians in the UK, explore Nottingham if you want to, participate in any sports that you have confidence in such as badminton, football, netball, volleyball, tennis or even congkak and batu seremban.

If you are interested to join our sports team or support them, if you feel like tasting real-licious Malaysian food in the UK or if you wish to explore Nottingham instead, please reply this email saying you're in.

And please sign-up your name at Waterhole bar at Student Union (some of Malaysian Soc. committee members will be waiting for you there).

The first meeting for 2010

On the 24th of September, the Malaysian Society gathered all the Malaysians in Portsmouth to give a briefing and presentation of the society. We had speakers presenting at the gathering, all sharing their experiences as a student studying in a foreign country.

The attendants of the gathering, which included many B. ED TESL juniors and seniors, as well as other students from Malaysia.

Mr. Roslan Muhammad giving a speech on spirituality, and Muslims' way of life in UK.

Puan Fazlinah Said, a PhD. student here, giving a speech about the ways of studying here in the UK.

Mr. Wan Agyl from Southampton University, or famously known to us Malaysians here in the UK as Soton, came as a representative of the MSD and MSA.

Puan Ashmiza, former teacher at MARA Junior Science College in Malaysia, who is now a PhD. student, giving a speech about the differences between Western and Asian culture.

The students listening attentively to the speeches and presentations.

Kickers FC, a very active Malaysian football team here in Portsmouth giving a presentation about the club.

Our president, Mr. Hafizal Ismail, giving his closing speech for the gathering.

It was a successful event of introducing the society to all Malaysian students studying in Portsmouth, thanks to the dedication and commitment of all the committee members. 'Til the next meeting!

A letter from your UPMY

University of Portsmouth
Malaysian Society 2010/2011

Assalamualaikum/Hi.

As this academic year has finally comes to an end, on behalf of both the previous and current board of committees, I would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt gratitude to ALL for the supports we received throughout the year.

As for this summer, I assume that many of us will be doing a little bit of travelling, so go and have a blast or getting a part time job, perhaps? Well, then I'd wish you very well and definitely good luck! And for the rest who are already back at home or om your way back home sweet home, do watch your diet and keep a healthy lifestyle. You wouldn't want to put on too much weight and too much of social activities with your mates back at home. Of cause, stay out of sun!

As the newly elected Malaysian Society board committee, we have planned many exciting events for the members throughout the next academic year. This events include activities like Malaysian Night, Portsmouth Games, BBQ party as well as educational activities for the benefits of the members. We are hoping that through this society all Malaysian Society members can stick together and be united as a whole big family. Truth to be told; we can never organize any events without support or participation from all of you.

Currently our society has less than 150 members causing the chances to be successful in organizing activities or events rather thin. We are really hoping that after the summer break, all members will take the very first step of supporting us by renewing their membership and participating in all the events that we are going to organize in future.

By breaking down, generally you will be only spending £1 on this society monthly - and it does seem reasonably cheap". For your information, the previous board committee had struggled to maintain the society's finance last year. This is due to the reason that half of the membership fee were refunded to the new members as it is found that the membership fees were not affordable. When we start the session anew now, we are left with no funding at all, causing us to start all over again.

We really hope that you will continue to support the society.
We look forward to see you the next academic year and serve the society to the benefit of all.

And don't forget to look out for our boot during Freshers Fayre during orientation week!! You may want to know what we'll be got up to for the next academic year.

Best Wishes
Thank you

One World Week Monday

Behold...we will be travelling around the world in just one day, even faster than Philleas Fogg - except that we are cheating by having the world displayed right in front of us at UPSU's newly opened third space. Yes, it is another edition of University of Portsmouth's One World Week. As usual, UPMY always (and have always been) have a booth dedicated to showing the beauty of multi-culturalism to the rest of the world.

From Oman to Malaysia to Indonesia to Saudi Arabia to India and so on. It doesn't get any better than this...

Two gorgeous ladies with our very own booth. Tourism pamphlets courtesy of Tourism Malaysia office, London.

"Okay, so 100 of these equals to about 25 Pounds, 50 equals to about 10 Pounds, 10 equals to about 2 Pounds..."

Celebrating friendship with Nigerians...

"Anok ganu men biso~"

Of course, any Malaysian cultural showcase wouldn't be complete without cultural performances. Our graceful dancers certainly didn't disappoint the cheering crowd of hundreds.

Apparently spotlights are not just for dancers alone...

India vs UK

"Hmm, I wonder if Malaysians still live on trees?"

Yes, I know you all want encore. You asked for it, you got it. The next stop will be at Ravelin Park, this Friday (30th of April 2010). See you there! Until then, salam muhibah.
