Freshtival !!!

Hi everyone, and a BIG Welcome back to Portsmouth!!!
It is so lovely to see all the Malaysians mingling around through the week..!!
And laughing out loud under the sun for sure!

As some of you might have known,
Freshtival is still ongoing with a mixture of fun events which fill up with lots of useful information,
especially for the new students.
We hope you all have a blast through the weeks.

Freshers' Fayre took two days in the Freshtival.
It was on the 21st of September and 22nd of September.
We had received many new members, as well as the previous members.

We would like to give a,
WARMEST WELCOME!
to the new members and all the past year(s)' members who renew their memberships.
Thank you for your love and support for this society.

Apology for the first day to all since we had no booth on the first day due to some technical problems.
However,
We managed to at least made up a place to use as a temporary counter and
we had some flyers to attract new members.
In spite of that, Malaysians are always full of spirit and we can still found each other!!

We are in tent for the second day.
And there are more and more members signing in!
We are really
LOOKING FORWARD to meet everyone in the next welcoming sessions!!

We hoped everyone enjoyed the Freshers' Fayre as mush as we did!
And..
We should be proud seeing Malaysian flag waving in a land far from home.

Thank you again to all the members.
With your loyalty and support,
and it is because of you,
We are still here!
See you all soon, and sooner!

Come join us!!

Another year of university life is starting soon! Hope everyone is ready and prepared for the new academic year!

First of all, we would like to give our appreciation to the Committee of Malaysian Society 2010/2011 for all their efforts and hardwork throughout the previous academic year.

They’ve organised events like Deeparaya celebration, Chinese New Year celebration, Heritage walk along seafront and several small chillout sessions. Organising these events weren't exactly easy, because they had to juggle their time for assignments and making sure the events were held smoothly. Although there were a few slight mishaps, but they have done their best!

So, A BIG THANK YOU to all the committee members of 2010/2011!! And THANK YOU to all the members that came for our Malaysian Society events!

Last year was a good year and hopefully this year would be better year, with our new committee members!

For returning students, I'm sure you've heard of the Freshers Fayre that is organised by University of Portsmouth before the start of every academic year.

For new students, Freshers Fayre is a fun-filled fair where all the clubs and societies will set up their own booth for the signup of new members. There will also be other organisations/companies that will be there to promote their services.

It is the perfect place to explore and have a look at all the clubs and societies that you might want to join, and as always, there will be plenty of freebies and shopping vouchers that will be given out to everyone!

So, don't forget to come up to the Freshers Fayre, and make sure you visit the Malaysian Society booth when you are there!! It's always a comfort to know some Malaysians when you are studying alone abroad, because we understand what you are going through!

Freshers Fayre

Announcement: Annual General Meeting & Dinner

ASSALAMUALAIKUM & Hello

First thing first, how was your holiday? Are you still in holiday mood?
Well, hope you'll be ready for next week because there are lots of things that you will need to finish up before summer break.
Exams, assignments and etc.

As for Malaysian Society, we also have some work to settle before the long holiday. And to do that, we need ALL MEMBERS to participate in the upcoming event which we have been planning since before Easter break.
Believe it or not, it will be the last event organised by us.

The details of the event are as follows:

Event : Annual General Meeting & Dinner
Date : 6th May 2011
Time : 4.00-6.00p.m* (Meeting)
Venue : Room 2.07, Park Building*
*Time and Venue has been amended

Basically, Annual General Meeting is organised by every society at the end of the society effective year to elect new committee members for the next academic year. All the members will also have the chance to listen to the society' final reports and its progress from the beginning of this academic year until the end of the term. Therefore, it is very important for all members to attend this meeting as your vote will determine who will be running UPMY for the next academic year.

There will be 15 posts that will be opened for nomination on that day:

1) President
2) Vice President
3) Secretary
4) Vice Secretary
5) Treasurer
6) Publicity Manager
7) Publicity Officer 1
8) Publicity Officer 2
9) Sports Manager
10) Sports Officer 1
11) Sports Officer 2
12) Head of Human Resource (HR)
13) HR Officer 1
14) HR Officer 2

** Note: Please be advised that nominees who fail to attend the meeting will be removed from the list and nominations will still be opened during the meeting.

Annual General Dinner
Venue: Water Margin, Gunwharf Quays
Time: Right After AGM

The good news is, the society will give 2 pound 'subsidy' to those who join the dinner, which means if the meal cost 10 pound, you will only have to pay 8 pound for it.
Members need to pay their own bill first before getting refund from us. This is to make the job easier.

This will be the last event from us so please don't hesitate to join us.
Come along and have fun!!!

Best wishes
UPMY

Have Something to Say? – CEKU’s Bookmark Caption Competition

If you’ve picked up one of the newly designed CEKU bookmarks, you’ll notice an interesting fact on one side of thebookmark, and an invitation to voice your opinion on our website, www.ceku.org. We at CEKU have decided to take this to another level!

Do you have something to share – an interesting thought or fact about Malaysia and all things related to her? Then share it with us in no more than 15 words, together with a 300 to 700 word essay explaining why you think what you want to share is interesting. You can be creative as you like in your explanation. If you choose to share a fact, please cite your source as well.

The winner of the Grand Prize will win a Kindle Wireless Reading Device with Wi-fi. Also, the top 3 winning entries will be printed as bookmarks to as promotional material for CEKU for 2011 and 2012, and will be premiered at the 5th Annual Malaysian Student Leaders Summit 2011 that will be happening over summer! This conference takes place over a two day period, and sees 800 young Malaysians come together to listen and debate issues with prominent speakers from various industries.

So what are you waiting for? Submit your entry (or entries – you can send in asmany as you like) by 1st July to ceku@ukeconline.com. If you have any enquiries, you can contact Natasha at natasha@ukeconline.com.

Blurb!

Blurb! is a publication produced annually by UKECares, the Community and Welfare Development Committee of UKEC. It is essentially a guide book for Malaysian students coming to the United Kingdom or Ireland for the first time, so as to give them guidance on what to expect, what to do, where the best deals are, etc. On behalf of the committee, I would like to invite you to send any articles that you feel would be appropriate for Blurb! to me at melissa@ukeconline.com. If you would like to contribute as a writer, layout and graphics designer, or photographer, feel free to contact me as well. The closing date for applying to be part of the team for Blurb! is 1 May 2011.

If you would like to help out with marketing Blurb!, please send an email to Kit Weng at yapkitweng@ukeconline.com - we will be distributing Blurb! at pre-departure briefings conducted by the British Council. Blurb! is printed and available at no charge - hence if you would like to have some copies of Blurb! for your own Malaysian Society pre-departure events, please send an email to Kit Weng with your contact details in Malaysia, as well as the number of copies of Blurb! you would like to have, and we will accommodate your request accordingly. About 800 copies of Blurb! will be published - depending on the volume of requests, we will adjust the number of copies of Blurb! to be printed accordingly.

Thank you very much!

Unity and Living as a Big Family

On the 20th of March, UPMY held a short education seminar. We had a talk by our guest from Warwick, En Ahmad Johari Mohamad. The speech was divided into two sessions with different titles: UNITY and LIVING IN A BIG FAMILY. The main content of the talks was to incorporate unity among Malaysians, disregarding the little things such as race and religion.

Our speaker looking at his notes on his netbook.

MC for the day, Tavamani.

An introduction of the speaker.

Audience cracking up at a joke.

The speaker giving his speech.

Time for a break!

Home-made sandwiches

Yummy!

Picture time!

Pouring water for the audience.

A token of appreciation.

Thank you En Ahmad Johari! We hope to hold more events like this in the future. Look forward to it!
