Chinese New Year celebrations 2011

Last Sunday, the society held a Chinese New Year celebration for the Malaysians. Although it was two weeks late, it was something that everyone looked forward to. Despite the low number of replies we got of people who are attending the event, it turned out to be one of our successful events. The low number of participants didn't prevent us from having a good time. We had great food (steamboat, fried rice, popiah, tau foo fah), awesome company (even having some Turkish and Hong Kong guests) and entertaining games.

Remember the 'Forbidden Word' game? It made everyone think about what they had to say, as they can't say NO or it's Malay equivalent, TAK/TIDAK. Then we had the charades-like game, where a person from the table has to guess his/her team member's description of  a word. The funny acts that they did and the words that came out of their mouth! Jagung (corn) to describe the Petronas Twin Towers? LOL And a contestant flapping his arms to describe tandoori chicken? Golden moment. Lastly, it was the 'camwhoring' game, where everyone gathers in a circle, and passes around a camera that was set on a timer. The person who gets caught on camera when the timer goes off, is out of the circle. While everyone usually poses in front of the camera, this game made everyone avoid it!

Vice president Jameson Ling thanking the guests for coming, and starting the event.

First things first, fortune cookies!

Steamboat on every table.

The popiah

Putting ingredients into the steamboat.

*munch-munch*

The tau foo fah (soya-based dessert)

Chocolate fountain

The first game of the night -- the red packet quiz.

Do you know the answer?

Here's the question.

Hmmm........what could the answer be?

I know!

Yes, you over there!

Congratulations!

Your answer is correct!

Yay, more munchies for me.

A new bowl to eat my steamboat in.

The steamboat needs more filling!

You have to make him guess the word.

A tall building! Jagung!

Uhhhh........

Hahaha!

It's...a....

Next!

That thing! That thing!

You know!

Ok, slow down....

Wait...you know....

It's...the....

Oh!

Let's begin the camwhoring session!

And pass it around...

I need to be on the camera....oops!!!

Let's start again.

You're on camera!

Thank you very much to everyone who attended. We hope you had a wonderful time with us, and we hope to organise more entertaining events for YOU soon. Look forward to it!

Background to the walk
Resource: AA For the Road Ahead

Portsmouth is steeped in maritime history. For over 800 years it has been the home of the Royal Navy, playing a key role in the defence of the British Empire and synonymous with Nelson's victory at Trafalgar. It was from these shores that many of Britain's great naval heroes set sail to earn their place in history. Those days may have gone but their legacy lives on in Old Portsmouth, with its quaint houses and colourful waterfront. On this route you can walk along the centuries-old fortifications and discover Britain's naval heritage.

History is brought to life by the majestic ships and fascinating museums and exhibitions. Allow plenty of time to visit the site, for there is much to see and explore. See the spot where Nelson died on HMS Victory, view the hull of Henry VIII's favourite warship, which sank in 1545 with the loss of 700 men and dramatically rose again from the sea bed in 1982, then step back in time and experience life aboard a Tudor warship by visiting the amazing Mary Rose Exhibition. Explore the four vast decks of HMS Warrior, Britain's first iron-clad battleship, built in 1860, and discover more about the Navy in the absorbing Royal Navy Museum. This includes the Victory Gallery and a breathtaking recreation of HMS Victory's gundeck at the height of the Battle of Trafalgar, in Action Stations, a new exhibition area.

The Garrison Church, founded in 1212 as a hospice for travellers and the sick, was where Charles II married his Portuguese bride, Catherine of Braganza, in 1662. It was reduced to its roofless state by bombing during the Blitz in World War Two.

Spice Island, a tiny peninsula of narrow cobbled lanes, lay outside the 17th-century walls and during the 18th and 19th centuries was bursting with all the life, danger and excitement one associates with a thriving naval port, filled with sailors and press gangs. At one time, it was said, 2,000 prostitutes and 200 beer houses could be found here, along with gambling saloons and cock fighting.

The waterfront land here, closed to the public for centuries, has now been opened up for everyone to enjoy. There are public promenades, viewing terraces for maritime events and berths for tall ships, and the bright and bustling Gunwharf Quays complex now features cafés, bars, restaurants, a cinema and over 80 shops.

Mentoring program

Hello UPMY-ians! February is here to sweep the cold away. Do you feel any warmer? Or still adjusting to the cold? Say "hello" to the new semester as well. It's time for exam results, more classes and new assignments.

But fret not! We have found a way to keep things interesting for you here in Portsmouth. One question, though: do you want to make new friends?

If your answer is a resounding "Yes", then we have the thing for you. It's called the 'Mentoring program' and it is a way to meet new people, or meet the same people you've been meeting and forging a better bond with them. Basically, all the members will be divided into 4 groups. One student rep will be in charge on each group.

The purpose is to make it easier for the student rep to reach out to the members. This can be achieved by organising social gatherings or sports for a smaller capacity of participants.

As usual, we would love to get any ideas from you guys to get a basic understanding of what kind of activities that you are keen on. For example, going out for a movie night, playing sports like football or netball or even going out for a cup of tea.

Sounds good, eh? Who knows, your future best friend or soulmate might be in the same group. :p

Sound off at the comments, mail us, or just approach anyone from the committee!
